Whether it was the annual giddiness found in new year’s resolves or just the nerd community’s fostered infatuation with the young actor, last week the internet nearly collapsed in on itself at the news that Levitt very well could be starring in the lead role of Star Lord in James Gunn’s 2014 space epic Guardians of the Galaxy. Other names including Lee Pace, Zachary Levi, and even John Krasinski have also swirled around the part in the past few weeks, but now Levitt’s done the noble thing and removed his name from contention for the part in favor of a rather surprising project.Īccording to /Film, instead of Marvel’s ambitious journey through the galaxy, Levitt will be starring in Sin City:A Dame to Kill For. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller and starring Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Dennis Haysbert, among others. One of his most recent roles was his part as “hot-head” Detective John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises, a role that may just be one of the most critical going forward in the next few years for the DC cinematic world. Levitt seems to have the market cornered in what seems like a Bucket-List-style mission to make a great movie in every conceivable genre. The actor who was once known for his quirky grin and “aww shucks” spirit from Angels in the Outfield, 10 Things I Hate About You or Halloween H2o: Twenty Years Later (also known as the scariest film ever made about water).
For Looper, cult status is its future.Ever since The Dark Knight Rises, Joseph Gordon Levitt has basically been unstoppable. A leitmotiv of this film is that no one is immune from the effects of the past, Sinatra notwithstanding in his apparent satisfaction with how things turned out. Because it's an intelligent tale, the overall theme of responsibility for our actions (the existential part) flows quietly from the action, be it as simple as running from the bad guys to the complexity of deciding on the sacrifices willing to be made to alter the future. With less CGI and few glitzy machines (in fact most of the vehicles look shabby 2012 and the loopers' weapon is a sawed-off Steampunk shot gun-how's that for past and future?), this thriller relies to an effective degree on the excellent cast to relay the challenges inherent in altering any past. Yes, it's existentially a difficult task, and therein lies the drama of this satisfying sci-fi. The Mob, headed by a very relaxed and dangerous Jeff Daniels as Abe, determines to eliminate all loopers, and Joe is next on the list to kill himself by flashing back. Joseph Gordon Levitt's Joe is a "looper," an assassin who goes into the past to murder someone needed to be absent in the future, 2072. But as Sinatra sings, "Regrets I've had a few, but then too few to really mention," this film challenges you to think of the implications of reversing those regrets or keeping the future the same because you kind of like the way things went. Also throw in thoughts about Christopher Nolan's Memento and Inception to get the flavor of Looper.
